| .... In a Story told by the Eddas, the poetic saga of the Norse Gods, the Runic alphabet was a gift from Odin. The word rune pronounced: Rue~woon means secret wisdom or wisper. |
|
| .... Many versions over the years produced several variants of the runes, including the Elder and Younger Futhark. but for now I will discuss the The "Elder Futhark, from which I practice myself. |
| .... The runes originated sometime around 600 to 200 BCE., as magical symbols engraved in or painted on stone, wood, crystal and tile. They were developed into the first Norse alphabet. Runes were commonly found on the old Germanic grave stones and markers |
| .... The younger version of the sixteen character alphabet became the most commonly used. But I use the 24 charater version of Elder Futhark myself for divinatory use. |
The Elder Futhark has 24 runes. This "runic alphabet" got its name after the sound of what is traditionally held to be the six first runes in this "alphabet":
F - U - Þ - A - R - K translated F-U-TH-A-R-K |

.....I would like my readers to know and understand. . Most old Norse material hails from Scandanavia and Iceland. . Much of the
scholarly material has not been translated into English and , or has been lost in antiquity . Runes were mainly found to mark the grave of a Norse person. and were used to give magical meaning to the marker.
.... There are many versions of the Runic alphabet. . Each has variations in name, shape, esoteric meaning and magical uses. . One should not mix Futharks, or the intent and meaning becomes confused and becomes moot. . The Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and the Younger or Scandinavian Futhark are the most frequently seen versions of the runic alphabets in use today. The runes are broken into three sections of eight, called Aettir. . This helps one to remember their order, and and influences of the Aett as you will learn has significance in magical use.
