Aurora Borealis

.... The colored lights that often appear in the night sky, specially in the extreme Northern Hemisphere, as the results of charged solar particles being attracted to the Earth's magnetic poles.

.....Often called the "Northern lights and are revered by the Eskimo or the Inuit people who interpret them as the spirits of the blessed dead, who are sporting in the Heavens.

.....Other groups of peoples around the world have seen them more ominous portents... Lands where the lights only make a occasional appearances, have been considered a precursor for a beginning of a new war.....Atraditions strengthened when the lights were seen as far south as london in 1939 during WWII and again as far south as Ohio just before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

..... In Northumberland the lights are sometimes called "Lord Derwentwater's Lights", in memory of the display that occurred on the night February 24 1716 . When James Earl Derwentwater was executed for his part in the failed rebellion of that year.
